Author Cynthia Clampitt shares insights into discovering local history sites

WHEATON—The past is accessible if you travel through time, figuratively speaking.

Noted historian and author Cynthia Clampitt will give visitors to the DuPage County Historical Museum a guide to exploring Midwest history by experiencing the magic and fun of attending special events and visiting noteworthy historical places.

Clampitt’s program, “Destination: Heartland History,” a presentation of the Culinary Historians of Northern Illinois and the DuPage County Historical Museum, will be center stage in the Museum Auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23.

Clampitt authored “Destination Heartland: A Guide To Discovering the Midwest’s Remarkable Past,” a book published in 2022 that serves as a guide to visiting historical sites and programs throughout the Midwest region.

Attendees at this free event will learn about historically significant places to visit, how best to plan visits and what special events to consider attending when making travel plans.

She will explore the region’s agrarian roots, legendary figures and their important contributions to American society. She will also view history through the lens of culinary trends and traditions.

Clampitt is a Culinary Historians of Northern Illinois board member and has been a member of this nonprofit organization since 2017. For more information about CHNI, please visit culinaryhistoriansofnorthernillinois.com.

“I can’t wait to hear her destination heartland program. I think she’ll give us a different perspective,” said Gerry Rounds, president of the CHNI.  “She is a very giving person and very knowledgeable.”

Rounds, a retired teacher and culinary historian, writer and consultant, said Clampitt’s book will be available for purchase at the event for $20. Cash or check will be accepted.
