Fundraiser for Sensory Garden and Rotary Charities Set for April 15

WHEATON—The powerful forces of good will come together Saturday, April 15 when the Wheaton Park District and the Rotary Club of Wheaton A.M. presents the Superhero Fun Run.

Cloaked in capes and costumes, runners will take to the streets in downtown Wheaton for a 5K race that begins at 8:30 a.m.

It’s all part of an effort to do good for the Play for All Sensory Garden and Playground Foundation and Rotary Charities. The fundraiser will help both nonprofit groups reach their goals.

Runners may dress as any superhero they hold in high regard – Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America are a few examples.

The Superhero Fun Run is the updated version of the Fun Run in Color, an annual event that historically drew thousands each spring.

The race is for both kids and adults and is untimed so all skill levels are welcome. The starting line will be at Main Street and Seminary Avenue.

Spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer on their favorite runners.

For those who would prefer to compete in a “virtual” run, that option is available.

There are a few ground rules. No vehicles, except wheelchairs, can be used in the race. Strollers are permissible but anyone riding in a stroller must remain in the stroller for the duration of the race.

Pets are not allowed; service animals must be approved for race participation by the race director 72 hours before race day.

When registering, please note any special accommodation requests. Please contact race director Carolyn Wilkin at [email protected] with any questions.

All participants will be required to sign a waiver when registering online. A parent or guardian must sign a waiver for any runners under age 18.

Whether the sun is shining or rain is falling, the race will go on. In the event of severe inclement weather, the run committee will decide if the run should be canceled or postponed.

The registration entry fee is $35 per runner through March 15, $40 from March 16 through April 11 and $45 from April 12 through April 15.

Online registration is available at wheatonparkdistrict.com until 8:15 a.m. on race day, April 15.

Packet pick-up will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at the Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard St. Packets also can be picked up from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. on race day at Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave.

The Superhero Fun Run is one of four special footraces set for this year under the Race Wheaton banner. The other races are the Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals, the Light the Torch Night Run and the Reindeer Run. Runners may opt to register for all four runs at a discount. Race Wheaton registration is $120.

A portion of the proceeds will help the Sensory Garden and Playground expand and continue to serve the needs of all children, of all ability levels, with accessible playground equipment and sensory garden experiences.
