WHEATON LANDMARK HAS A NEW NAME!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: August 21, 2015

WHEATON, IL – Central Athletic Center, located at 500 S. Naperville Road, has a new name. Over the years it has adopted many names in its almost-a-century-long history. It opened in the mid-1920s as Wheaton Community High School. From 1992-2006, the building became Hubble Middle School. In 2012, Bradford Equities purchased the old Hubble Middle School property from Community Unit School District 200 and the Wheaton Park District purchased the 50,000-square-foot section of the former school that contains the gymnasiums along with the ball fields and park.

In May, the Wheaton Park District enlisted the help of the community to find name ideas that capture the tradition that the iconic building exemplifies in the community. Over 100 ideas were submitted through an online portal. A formal naming committee was formed and they quickly went to work sifting through the names and narrowing it down to three names that they brought to the Wheaton park board on August 19. At the meeting, the board approved changing the Central Athletic Center name to Central Athletic Complex and added that the park located on the premises, would be called Gateway Park.

Per park district policy, the name must be public knowledge for 30 days prior to the board taking official action on the name. The board will officially announce the name at the October 21 park board meeting to be held at Wheaton City Hall located at 303 W. Wesley in Wheaton.
